A communal ceramic-making workshop centered around the unpredictable, elemental process of pit firing.

Rather than a traditional ceramics class, this workshop is intended as an opportunity for participants to create together, experiment with clay, and embrace the material and symbolic relationship between earth, stones, talismans and imagined spirits.

I want to let participants make whatever they like while using these themes as a point of departure. The goal is to make the workshop accessible and enjoyable for people who may be new to ceramics to allow them to try working with the material, as well as experienced ceramicists to embrace a more loose approach and the unpredictability of the firing process.

The hope is for the final exhibition to showcase a range of work that celebrates the physical and intuitive nature of working with clay, along with the unexpected textures, colors and transformations that can emerge for pit-firing. The symbol of a special stone or talisman holds weight throughout history and across cultures—they are vessels of intention, carried for protection, good luck, healing or guidance. With this workshop, participants are invited to create a kind of contemporary talisman: an object that might embody a personal hope, need, memory, symbol, or desire. Together, the works create a collective landscape of personal symbols and material transformations—each one distinct, but brought together through the shared process of making and firing.

Triston Wu is from San Diego, CA and lives/works in San Francisco, CA
Working across sculpture, site-specific installation, and furniture, Wu reconsiders everyday things and situations to examine the structural and interdependent relationships between things, society, and nature, often through a deadpan and humorous lens.
